GLORIA ESTEFAN Born in Havana,Cuba, 9/1/57; Gloria has become one of the most popular female vocalists and songwriters in the world. The Miami Sound Machine had great success overseas before gaining recognition in the U.S. . Gloria rose from poverty to have a successful career, but she never forgot her Latin heritage. Despite forced immigration because of the situation in Cuba, her family never gave up hope. Gloria's father became a POW of the Bay Of Pigs Invasion , and was imprisioned for over a year. Gloria began singing at an early age, first as a healing from depression. She met Emilio Estefan in 1975 at a wedding where he invited her to sing for his band" THE LATIN BOYS". She eventually became a member and the band changed to the "Miami Sound Machine". In 1979, Gloria and Emilio were married. She also attended the Univ. of Miami where she graduated at the top of her class. After 1980 the group found world-wide success; but U.S. success began in 1985 with "Conga". In 1987 the group changed it's name to "Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine".
Some of my favorite albums by Gloria include "Let it Loose"; " Anything For You" ;"Christmas Through Your Eyes ".
On March 20, 1990 I was shocked and saddened by the news of the terrible accident that she and here family were in. The groups tour bus, on the way to a concert in Syracuse, New York from Washington D.C. was stuck by a simi-trailer on an icy road. She had to be airlifted to a hospital for back surgery. She was nearly paralized and doctors were optimistic on full recovery. They said may never peform again. Millions of fans supported her with letters, flowers and prayers; and she never gave up hope. Rigorous therapy and exercise also helped her comback. She wanted to let everyone know how much the power of prayer helped her recovery. The following year she returned with a year long 29 country tour while releasing " INTO THE LIGHT ", which included the single " COMING OUT OF THE DARK ". In 1992, Gloria organized a relief concert for the victims of Hurricane Andrew. The same year she was honored with the Humanitarian of the Year award.
