Fred Astaire was born May 10, 1899 in Omaha, Nebraska. Frederick Austerlizt began dancing at an early age. He was already dancing in Vaudeville with his sister Adele at the age of seven. They made their debut on Broadway in 1917 and became stars as teenagers. They were known internationally and kept dancing together until Adele retired from dancing and married in 1932. In 1933 Fred married his first wife Phyllis.


Although he had met Ginger Rogers in New York in 1930, they first met in Hollywood in 1933 when they were cast as supporting actors in their first of ten films together " FLYING DOWN TO RIO ". This was followed by starring roles in " THE GAY DIVORCEE " in 1934. Many famous songs introduced by Fred and Ginger movies include "Music Makes Me ", " The Continental ", " A Needle In A Haystack ", " Night and Day ", " Cheek To Cheek ", " A Fine Romance ", " Let's Call the Whole Thing Off ", " Change Partners And Dance " and " Let's Face the Music ". There were of course many others. Their last film together was " THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY ". Other dance partners of Fred included Jane Powell, Audrey Hepburn, Cyd Charisse, Leslie Caron, Rita Hayworth (Ginger's cousin) and Gene Kelly. Judy Garland co-starred in " EASTER PARADE " and Paulette Goddard in " SECOND CHORUS ".
